•To halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than $1.25 a day. There are still 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty. Globally there are still 384 million workers living below the $1.25 per day poverty line.
•To halve between 1990 and 2015 the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. This target is within reach by 2015 but globally there are still 870 million people estimated to be undernourished.
As Christians we have a responsibility to work and pray for the poor and displaced of the world and all those in need and this week we join with Christian communities throughout the world in praying for the global eradication of poverty.
Prayer for the eradication of poverty
Heavenly Father we ask that this prayer will draw us deeper into right relationships with you, with ourselves, with each other, with institutions and with the earth. We place our hopes, our dreams, our works and our efforts for justice in particular the eradication of poverty before you. We pray that we may listen deeply and reflectively so that we will be more consciously aware of the needs of the most vulnerable in our society. Having identified those needs may we have courage to work courageously for the reign of God and the transformation of our world, Amen.
