Barnabas went on many missionary journeys at first in the company with St. Paul and later with St. Mark who was a younger relative of his. His further history is not known but there is a tradition that he was martyred in Cyprus and buried on that island. It is said that during the fifth century his body was found and with it a copy of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The remains were carried to Milan and re-interred in the cathedral there. Because of the story about finding his body, St. Barnabas is often represented in religious art as holding a copy of St. Matthew's Gospel in his hand.
Prayer for St Barnabas
Generous God, whose Son Jesus Christ has taught us that it is more blessed to give than to receive: help us by the example of your apostle Barnabas, a good man full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, to be generous in our judgements and unselfish in our service; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and ever. Amen.
