During 2014 the UNHCR recorded a massive increase in the number of internally displaced persons as a consequence of conflict, violence and human rights violations in the Middle East. Over 2 million Iraqi citizens were displaced in 2014 and at least 40% of the entire Syrian population are now classed as internally displaced.
The number of asylum seekers has also increased dramatically. On average, about one million people seek asylum each year. By mid-2014 there were at least 1.2 million asylum seekers and the number has continued to climb. This week we join with Christian communities throughout the world in praying for these desperate people. We invite you to use this prayer in your private devotions.
Prayer for World Refugee Day
Almighty and merciful God, whose Son became a refugee and had no place to call his own; look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger, homeless and hungry. Bless those who work to bring them relief; inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts; and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
