Most years we will hear the well-known passage where Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” It is a pertinent question for all of us! Most of us who are regulars and have been following Jesus for a number of years will be able to answer, as Peter does in the Gospel today, that Jesus is the Messiah. The problem is, and this is the trap that Peter falls into – what do we understand by that? For Peter to hear that the Messiah must suffer doesn’t tally with his understanding of what the Messiah is and does! And so while we may believe in Jesus, even commit our lives to him, it IS good to reflect once more on our own response to this penetrating question.
May God’s spirit live in us and help us with humility and generosity to truly give up and turn control of our lives over to the one who brings true life!
